Halo Beriti
Halo Beriti is a village located in the Gedeb District, within the Gedio zone. This coffee is cultivated and processed at elevations ranging from 1900 to 2300 m.a.s.l, benefitting from an optimal coffee-producing environment. This region is characterized by its microclimates and fertile soil, making it perfect to grow exceptional coffee, enhancing coffee profiles, and leading to more fruity and floral notes. The coffee's name originates from the village itself. The majority of Halo Beriti coffee is grown in a small area near the farmers' gardens. This region is well-known, not only as one of the most admired and popular coffee-growing areas worldwide, but also as the home of numerous families deeply involved in coffee production.
Their livelihood largely depends on selling coffee, making it vital to the Halo Beriti community. The processing station works with more than 500 small families who own farms around Halo Beriti. The processing center provides financial support, subcontracting opportunities, and premiums to these families.
Processing
Only the ripe cherries are picked from the trees. Once the cherries arrive at the processing station, the washing station team carefully selects the best ones, removing any that are unripe, overripe, or defective. This step is crucial to ensure a high-quality final product. This coffee is a natural, which means that the whole ripe cherries were left to dry with its skin and mucilage attached. The coffee is sundried for 15 days until it achieves the ideal moisture resulting in a sweeter and fruitier cup profile. After the coffee has been processed, it is transported to Addis Ababa for final milling and export preparation.
Price paid to producer
After we cupped the coffee and gave our feedback, we chose to buy this coffee. To us it is very important to inform our customers about all aspects of the coffee. That includes the price we as a roaster pay to the producer.Mostly we select a coffee coming from one farmer or farming family and that makes it easier to be transparant for our trade partners. This lot we selected with Cofinet. Hugo from Cofinet could provide us with an estimation for the price paid to the producer.
He said: “With a lot like Halo Beriti it is a little tricky to get the exact price paid to the producers. That's because the 500 farming families all gave different amounts of coffee cherries to the washing station in Halo Beriti. This year's cherry price was very high at between 230-280 ETB (Ethiopian Birr)/kg, which was 3 to 4 times higher than the prior season. If we take 250 ETB/kg as a guide, that would equate to around $10,71/kg of exportable green coffee. And that’s assuming a conversion of 7kg of cherry to 1kg of exportable green coffee. But it doesn’t take into account the weakening of the Birr since the harvest, so that $/kg price was probably a little bit higher.”
