Bitterzoet Coffee Roasters is founded on the principles of bringing an ode to the the farmers work and thriving to create the best cup possible.

We aim for a complex and sweet cup. We make that happen through roasting our coffees light or light to medium in small quantities. So on we hope to expand the love for coffee.

We roast in the centre of The Hague. At Bitterzoet Coffee Roasters we focus on the quality of the green beans as well as the quality of the roast.

About our roasting process

Selecting green beans

It all starts with tasting lots of fresh coffees from origins like Colombia, Ethiopia or Costa Rica. We select the coffees we like the most with the trade partners with sustainable and transparent sourcing

Small lots

After tasting, we buy small quantities to make sure we keep the coffee as fresh as possible. No bulk and so on focus on the hard work of coffee farmers. We roast on a classic drum roaster (Giesen), a machine made in the Netherlands.

Quality control

After receiving the selected coffee, we test the coffee after roasting through tastings. Sometimes it takes a few roasts to make the perfect profile, same for brewing the perfect cup.

Delighted brewing

And after all, we have so much joy from the perfect roast of the selected beans, so much we could drink it all ourselves. But we hope to delight you as well with our coffees.

Our design

The design of Bitterzoet Coffee Roasters is inspired by Solanum dulcamara, the bitterzoet flower. This plant typically blooms in late summer in the Dutch climate. After flowering, it produces a red to pink berry. Similarly, coffee plants also bear fruit after flowering — starting as green cherries that ripen to red.

Thanks to artist Joosje Bosch, Bitterzoet Coffee Roasters has found a beautiful way to tell this story through design.
